Alik Sakharov ( Russian Алик Сахаров ; born May 17, 1959 in Tashkent , Uzbek SSR , Soviet Union ) is an American cameraman and film director of Soviet origin.

Life

Sakharov was born in Tashkent and moved to Moscow with his family at the age of eight . At the age of twelve he attended a photography course after school ; when he was around 15 he bought his first 8mm film camera . In 1981 he emigrated to the United States and settled in the New York area. Until 1984 he worked as a watchmaker . In 1985 he produced his first film, The Russian Touch , a documentary about the third wave of Jewish emigrants from Russia in New York, especially in Brighton Beach . He then worked for several years as a freelance cameraman for music videos , commercials and smaller feature films .

In 1988 he received American citizenship . From 1999 he was involved in several high-profile television series on HBO , including The Sopranos , Sex and the City , Rome and Game of Thrones . Since 2007 he has also been working regularly as a director, especially in the television sector, for which he stopped his work as a cameraman from 2011.

Sakharov is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers . He has received several awards for his work, including two AFI Awards and an Emmy .
