season 1

1920 in Atlantic City: The district treasurer ( " County Treasurer", dt actually "county treasurer.") Enoch "Nucky" Thompson's in public as an opponent of alcohol consumption and proponents of Prohibition, but secretly plan he and his business partner, at the beginning the prohibition to make a lot of money from the sale of illegally produced or imported alcohol. Over the course of the first season, ties between Nucky Thompson and local politicians and criminals are shown. Murder, extortion, smuggling and bribery run through all circles. One day, Margaret Schroeder, a pregnant woman and member of the abstinence movement, visits Nucky; she asks him to find a job for her husband Hans. Thompson gives her a large amount of money to support her children, which, however, is taken from her by her husband. When Nucky observes Schroeder risking the money in a casino, Nucky's part in a violent attack on Schroder. After Hans Schroeder comes home in the evening, he beats his wife, causing her to lose her child. As a result, Nucky has Hans Schroeder killed. Meanwhile, a liquor delivery from Nucky's to gangster Arnold Rothstein is ambushed, killing some of Rothstein's men. Prohibition agent Nelson van Alden is investigating Thompson because he suspects that Thompson was behind the robbery to get his own alcohol back and to keep the profit obtained from the sale to Rothstein. In truth, however, Al Capone and James Darmody are responsible. There is a rift between Rothstein and Nucky. After the escalated attack, James flees to Al Capone in Chicago, where he supports the local gang boss Torrio in a competition with another gang. He later also finds an ally there in the form of a former sniper named Richard Harrow. Due to a war injury, he has to wear a mask that hides his disfigurement. Eventually, Darmody returns to Atlantic City to assist Nucky, and the dispute with New York gangster Arnold Rothstein laid out by the robbery is resolved by Nucky helping through his political contacts to help defend Rothstein's World Series baseball manipulation charges Dropped in 1919. Thompson calls a press conference in which he explains that those responsible for the massacre of the attack in the forest were actually Hans Schroeder and some accomplices. All wrongly accused, including Schroeder, are murdered by Darmody, Capone and Harrow. Eventually, Nucky and Margaret become a couple. Nucky's power continues to grow. It reached its climax in the season finale, when both the mayor he favored and the presidential candidate he supported were elected into office. Meanwhile, Van Alden commits a religiously motivated murder of his colleague Sebso, who, contrary to Van Alden, is of Jewish faith and was paid by Nucky to kill a key witness, during a supposed baptism ceremony. Nelson also fathered a child with Nucky's ex-girlfriend Lucy. The season is marked by James' dissatisfaction with his position, which leads him to consult with his father, the Commodore Louis Kaestner and Nucky's brother Eli about alternatives.

season 2

In the second season, Nucky Thompson is charged with election fraud, and James Darmody, Eli Thompson and the Commodore team up against Nucky Thompson, gradually driving him out of business. Nucky retires from his political offices and secretly intrigues with new allies. He was eventually charged with the ordered murder of Hans Schroeder. Meanwhile, the alliance of Nucky's opponents is crumbling. After the death of James' wife Angela, who was killed by a rival gangster, the commodore, who had been suffering from health problems for a long time, is stabbed to death by James during a fight. It turns out in a flashback that James had sexual intercourse with his mother prior to entering World War I, after they both came home drunk from a college ball. Due to his loss, James decides to make peace with Nucky and again, together with Harrow, murders all witnesses and confidants, thereby dropping the accusation of murder against Nucky. In order to circumvent the obligation to testify, Nucky and Margaret marry, but she begins an affair with Thompson's bodyguard Owen. In the season finale, Nucky manages to regain his influence over the city and kills James Darmody in revenge for his betrayal. He lets Eli live, but Eli has to go to prison for a year. Nelson van Alden has to flee the city due to an investigation into the murder committed the previous year and settles with his illegitimate child and his nanny in the small town of Cicero near Chicago.

season 3

The third season deals with a conflict with a competing gang of gangsters led by Gyp Rosetti, who is protected by New York gang boss Joe Masseria. After Nucky refuses to sell alcohol to Rosetti, Rosetti blocks an important point on Nucky's trade route and thus increasingly diminishes Nucky's influence. After barely escaping an assassination attempt, he convenes a meeting of all well-known criminals in the USA and asks for their support against Rosetti and Masseria. In poor health he is now on his own. When he assigns his bodyguard Owen to kill Masseria, the assassination fails and Owen is sent back to Nucky dead in a box. After Margaret sees Owens' body, she and her two children from their first marriage flee to New York. After he escapes another assassination attempt by Rosetti's men, Enoch Thompson and his butler Eddie Kessler, who was wounded in an exchange of fire, flee to his business partner Chalky White, who can protect him and his people. Meanwhile, Rosetti occupies Nucky's office and the brothel, which is run by James' mother, Gillian. Jimmy's remaining son also lives here, and Richard Harrow works as a bartender. After Rosetti's arrival, Gillian, who ingratiates herself with Rosetti, instructs Richard's men to escort Richard out of the house due to multiple expressions of his displeasure with Tommy Darmody's dealings. Nelson van Alden now works for the Irish gangster and rival Al Capones, Dean O'Banion. He sells alcohol and collects money. While Nucky rallies his last loyal partners, Eli secures Al Capone's support in the war against Masseria and Rosetti. Meanwhile, Harrow decides to get young Tommy Darmody out of the brothel, as he believes this is not the right place for a child. He kills several of Rosetti's people in an attack on the whore house and flees with the boy to an acquaintance. Now Masseria withdraws support from Rosetti due to the assistance of Arnold Rothstein, who has made an agreement with Thompson. The remaining men are killed in an ambush by Al Capone's gang. Gyp himself is murdered by his deputy Tonino, who in return is given safe conduct from Nucky.

Season 4

The fourth season is also marked by a conflict with the New York underworld, this time Nucky Thompson and his partner Chalky have to do with the African-American gang boss Narcisse from Harlem. At the same time, the FBI begins investigations into organized crime and also uses Nucky's brother Eli against his will. Nelson van Alden now runs over to Capone and helps kill his former boss Dean O'Banion. After Torrio narrowly escapes death by an assassin, he hands over the management of the Chicago underworld to Capone. Richard Harrow is reported to have attempted an assassination attempt on Narcisse on Nucky's instructions, but instead accidentally kills Chalky's daughter. While on the run, Richard is shot by a henchman Narcisses and dies a short time later of the injury. Meanwhile, Nucky's brother Eli goes into hiding in Chicago after killing a BOI investigator.

Season 5

The fifth and final season takes place 7 years after the storyline of Season 4, in 1931, and is marked by the rivalry between Nucky Thompson and Lucky Luciano. After a series of unsuccessful assassinations, Nucky wants revenge on his rival and has Bugsy Siegel kidnapped. In response, Lansky and Luciano kidnap William Thompson, Nucky's nephew. During the hostage exchange, Doyle is shot dead by Lucky and William is only released on the condition that Nucky can murder his former ally Salvatore Maranzano and hand over control of Atlantic City to Luciano and Lansky and their partners Benny Siegel and Johnny Torrio. Meanwhile, undercover agent Mike d'Angelo tries to put gangster Al Capone in jail. To maintain his camouflage, he kills former prohibition agent Nelson van Alden. Chalky White is shot dead by Valentin Narcisse's men after breaking out of prison. During the season, key scenes from Nucky's childhood are shown again and again, including an explanation of how Nucky began to work for the Commodore. In the final scene, Nucky Thompson walks down the promenade and meets a young man who worked for him. Nucky wants to prevent the boy from suffering a fate similar to his; He therefore offered him money several times in advance to keep him away from the world of crime. At the meeting, the boy reveals himself to be Tommy Darmody, James Darmody's son, and shoots Nucky.
