Sky Atlantic is a German-speaking pay TV broadcaster that specializes in broadcasting HBO productions and therefore bears the slogan “The Home of HBO”.

The pay-TV broadcaster went on air on May 23, 2012 at 9 p.m. and was free to receive for all Sky subscribers for three weeks . The “Sky Entertainment” package must be subscribed to for regular reception.

Between November 5, 2015 and September 11, 2017, the program was also broadcast one hour later on the Sky Atlantic +1 HD channel. On September 22, 2017, this was replaced by Sky 1 +1 HD .

The broadcaster achieved the best ratings, with 0.48 million viewers, with the premiere of the seventh season of the Game of Thrones series on July 17, 2017.

Sky Atlantic HD specializes in the broadcast of series. Through the cooperation with the US-American broadcasting network HBO, there are exclusive broadcasting rights for all of the broadcaster's productions. For series that were already taken at the time of the collaboration ( Girls , Luck ), the first broadcast rights did not automatically fall to Sky Atlantic HD and were only partially acquired, as in the case of Game of Thrones or Boardwalk Empire . In addition to the series from HBO and its sister station Cinemax , series from other production studios are also broadcast. On January 21, 2016, Sky plc. announced an agreement with the US pay-TV provider Showtime . According to this, Sky in Germany will broadcast all future series that have not yet been granted under license law in a linear manner and on demand (including Billions ). Sky also secures the exclusive option to offer all new non-scripted formats such as documentaries, late night shows and reality shows. All the programs broadcast have in common that they are offered in two-channel sound , i.e. in German and in most cases in English.

Sky Atlantic HD is digitally encrypted via cable , satellite and IPTV and can only be received with a Sky subscription in Germany and Austria. The station's content can also be viewed using the “Sky Go” app on a Windows computer, iPhone , iPad or iPod touch and the Xbox 360 . Since mid-September 2012, Sky Atlantic HD has also been fed into Switzerland by the cable provider Teleclub .

The distribution of Sky Atlantic in standard definition ceased at the end of November 2018.
