Masters of Sex is an American television series broadcast by Showtime . It was developed by Michelle Ashford based on Thomas Maier's biography Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the Couple Who Taught America How to Love . The series tells the story of William Howell Masters and Virginia E. Johnson , two researchers best known for their work on human sexual behavior. The series premiered on September 29, 2013 after the season opener of Homeland .

In December 2016, Showtime announced the end of the series after four seasons.

In the 1950s , sex researcher William Masters carried out intensive research into human sexual behavior. However, his environment is anything but open to this research. He gets help from his assistant Virginia Johnson, who initially only helps William to find experimental pairs, but over time he trained as a scientist. The series also focuses on their private relationship.

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing was based on dialogue books by Manja Condrus, Angela Ringer, Horst Müller and Jesco Wirthgen under the dialogue direction by Klaus Bauschulte by the dubbing company Berliner Synchron AG Wenzel Lüdecke in Berlin .

The transmitter Showtime ordered the pilot episode for the series in August 2011, along with the pilot episodes for Gurland on Gurland and Ray Donovan . In June 2012, a first season in the form of twelve episodes was then ordered.

Michelle Ashford has been hired as both producer and showrunner . In February 2012, the actors Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan were hired as leading actors. As early as November 2011, the male lead had actually already been filled with Paul Bettany , but this stepped out of the series in January 2012.

Two days after the fourth episode of the series was broadcast, Showtime extended the series to include a second season, which in turn consists of twelve episodes. A third season in the form of twelve episodes was ordered in August 2014. In August 2015, the series was extended by a fourth season, which is to be broadcast from September 2016.

The fourth and final season aired from September 11, 2016 to November 13, 2016.

The pay-TV broadcaster Sky Atlantic HD showed the first season between December 5, 2013 and February 20, 2014. The first broadcast on German free TV began on August 5, 2014 on ZDFneo .

The first season of the series received a lot of critical acclaim. It was rated on Rotten Tomatoes with an average of 8.4 out of 10 points based on 46 reviews.
