Rule changes

The Academy announced the following rule changes for the 67th Emmy Awards:

  • The number of nominations in the categories Best Comedy and Best Drama Series increased from 6 to 7.
  • The distinction between comedy and drama series is based on the average episode length. Series with a length of 30 minutes are comedy series, series with a longer duration per episode are drama series. However, the producers have the option of a committee consisting of five industry leaders appointed by the Academy and four representatives from the Board of Governors, which decides on a different classification. However, a two-thirds majority is required for this .
  • A miniseries is defined as a series with at least two episodes and a total running time of at least 150 minutes. It must tell a complete, non-repetitive story and have no further storylines and / or main characters in subsequent seasons.
  • A guest actor is defined as an actor who appeared in less than 50 percent of the episodes in the series.
