concept

Derek is filmed in the so-called mockumentary style , like Ricky Gervais' The Office . Gervais stars in the television series, writes the scripts and directs. The action takes place in a nursing home and focuses on the "carer" Derek. The main role is based on a character from Gervais' stand-up comedy program Rubbernecker from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2001. Derek portrays the carers and residents as unhappy outsiders who struggle with life as they are disadvantaged by the majority society , excluded and not wanted.

Gervais' inspiration for Derek came from relatives who work in nursing homes:

“Half my family are care workers. My sister works with kids with learning difficulties. My sister-in-law works in a care home for people with Alzheimer's. And four or five of my nieces work in old people's homes. I always write about what I know. "

“Half of my family are carers. My sister works with children who have learning difficulties. My sister-in-law works in a nursing home for people with Alzheimer's disease. And four or five of my nieces work in old people's homes. I always write about what I know. "

action

Gervais plays the 49-year-old Derek Noakes, a nurse in a nursing home who started there three years ago. He likes reality TV , game shows, and is interested in celebrities, fame, and YouTube . He is a nice, helpful, selfless man with good intentions. However, Derek is vulnerable because of his childlike naivete and low intelligence. He is mocked, ostracized and marginalized by society because of his social awkwardness, unsightliness and social inhibition. For Derek, being nice is more important than being smart or handsome. Some media outlets describe him as autistic , but Gervais always stated that Derek is not mentally retarded.

supporting cast

Kerry Godliman plays Derek's colleague and friend Hannah, who has worked in the home for 15 years. Karl Pilkington can be seen in the role of Dougie, the caretaker and bus driver of the home. He lives with Derek in a council flat . Kev is played by David Earl and is a friend of Dougie and Derek, who does not work in the home, but only spends time there with his two friends.

Reviews

The series was criticized , especially before it aired, for its portrayal of the apparently mentally handicapped Derek. Tanya Gold from the Guardian pointed Gervais' testimony from that he in Derek prejudice against disabled satirizes . Instead, the series is “more of an indolent cruelty than a satire.” Jack Seale of the Radio Times took up this again in his review: “[Derek] is presented uncynically as a hero who, in Gervais' words, is' better than us' is because he lacks ego and deceit and he just wants to be nice. Those who want to find an attack by Gervais' portrayal of Derek will have to search very hard. ”However, Seale criticized the series for relying too heavily on elements and characterizations from previous Gervais programs. However, he praised the final emotional scene in the pilot as "really excellent work by Gervais as an actor, writer and director". Seale also praised Kerry Godliman's performance: “Every moment she is seen is sigh-moving magic.” Sam Wollaston of the Guardian also agreed that Derek is indisputable, but overall “not very good” and that “the whole mockumentary thing now feels boring ”. The pilot episode was seen by just under two million viewers, over ten percent of the television audience at the time.
