San Martín de las Pirámides is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The community had 24,851 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 67.5 km² . The epithet las Pirámides refers to the pyramids of Teotihuacán not far from the main town .

The administrative seat and largest of the twenty places of the municipality is the eponymous San Martín de las Pirámides (12,812 inhabitants), other places with more than 1,500 inhabitants are San Pablo Ixquitlán , Santa María Palapa , Santiago Tepetitlán and Cozotlán Norte .

San Martín de las Pirámides is located in the northeast of the state of México, about 40 km northeast of Mexico City at an altitude of about 2300  m to 3046  m . More than 70% of the area of ​​the municipality is used for agriculture.

The municipality consists of a main part around the place San Martín de las Pirámides and a small exclave around the place Santiago Tepetitlán about 10 km further south.

The municipality of San Martín de las Pirámides borders on the municipalities Temascalapa , Axapusco , Otumba and Teotihuacán as well as with Santiago Tepetitlán on the municipality Tepetlaoxtoc .
