Zumpango is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The seat of the municipality is Zumpango de Ocampo . The community had 159,647 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 224.8 km² .

The name Zumpango comes from Nahuatl : tzompantli means "skull wall", and -co means "place, place", Zumpango roughly "place of the skull wall".

Zumpango is located in the north of the state of México, about 55 km north of Mexico City. Most of the municipality is used for agriculture.

The municipality of Zumpango borders on the municipalities of Tequixquiac , Hueypoxtla , Tecámac , Nextlalpan , Jaltenco , Teoloyucan , Coyotepec and Huehuetoca as well as the municipality of Tizayuca in the neighboring state of Hidalgo .
