Toluca is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de Toluca , the metropolitan area around Toluca de Lerdo , the capital of the municipality as well as of the entire state. The community had 819,561 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 454.4 km² .

The municipality of Toluca is centrally located in the western part of the state of México, about 70 km southwest of Mexico City . The highest point of the municipality forms in its extreme south the 4680 m high Nevado de Toluca , the average height of the municipality is about 2600 m . About 55% of the municipality area is used for arable farming, a good 13% of the municipality is forested, and almost 10% is urbanized.

The municipality of Toluca borders on the municipalities Almoloya de Juárez , Temoaya , Otzolotepec , Xonacatlán , Lerma , San Mateo Atenco , Metepec , Calimaya , Tenango del Valle , Villa Guerrero , Coatepec Harinas and Zinacantepec .
