Tultepec is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The community had 91,808 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 26.9 km² .

etymology

The name Tultepec is of Aztec origin and means "on the hill of Tule".

geography

Tultepec is located in the northeast of the state of México, about 10 km north of the border of the federal district of Mexico City at about 2250  m . More than 80% of the community area is used for arable farming, a good 17% is urbanized.

The municipality of Tultepec borders on the municipalities of Melchor Ocampo , Nextlalpan , Tonanitla , Tultitlán , Coacalco de Berriozábal and Cuautitlán .

Mammoths

The first rumors of megafauna remains in Tultepec began in the 1960s, but the authorities did not get any closer knowledge of the finds. The finds made during this time must be considered lost. In 2015, the remains of a mammoth known as the Mamut de Tultepec were found in the district of San Antonio Xahuento . In November 2019, it was announced that a ten-month dig had found 824 bones of at least fourteen different individuals, who, according to senior archaeologist Luis Córdoba Barradas, perished in man-made pits.

In the 2010 census, 1,121 speakers of an indigenous language were counted. 9% of the population was living in extreme poverty at the time.
