Papalotla is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City .
The municipality had 4,147 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 3.18 km² . The thus smallest municipality in the state in terms of area comprises two places according to INEGI statistics 2010: the main town Papalotla and the hamlet Mazatla .
The name Papalotla comes from Nahuatl : papalotl means "butterfly" and -tlan means "place", so Papalotla roughly means "place of butterflies".

Papalotla is located in the northeast of the state of México, about 30 km northeast of Mexico City at an altitude of 2260 m .
The Municipio Papalotla borders on the Municipios Chiautla , Tepetlaoxtoc and Texcoco .
