Lerma is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de Toluca , the metropolitan area around Toluca de Lerdo , the capital of the state. The municipality had 134,799 inhabitants at the 2010 census, its area amounts to 211.9 km².

The administrative seat and largest of the approximately 70 towns in the municipality is Lerma de Villada , other larger towns are Santa María Atarasquillo , San Pedro Tultepec , San Miguel Ameyalco and San Mateo Atarasquillo .

The municipality of Lerma is located in the western part of the state of México, between Toluca de Lerdo and Mexico City at an altitude of 2640  m to 3150  m .

A large part of the municipality is dominated by agriculture, 18% of the area is occupied by forests.

The municipality of Lerma borders with the municipalities of Xonacatlán , Naucalpan de Juárez , Huixquilucan , Ocoyoacac , Capulhuac , San Mateo Atenco , Toluca and Otzolotepec .
