Villa del Carbón is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the Villa del Carbón of the same name . The municipality had 44,881 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 307.7  km² .

Villa del Carbón is located in the north of the state of México, 35 km northwest of Mexico City at an altitude of 2300  m on the Taxhimay reservoir to 3600  m on the Cerro de La Bufa . 45% of the community area is forested, another 35% is used for agriculture.

The municipality of Villa del Carbón borders on the municipalities of Tepotzotlán , Chapa de Mota , Morelos , Nicolás Romero and Jiquipilco and on the municipality of Tepeji del Río de Ocampo in the state of Hidalgo .
