Amatepec is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . The seat of the municipality is Amatepec of the same name , while Palmar Chico is the largest town in the municipality . The municipality had 26,334 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 639.9 km² .

Amatepec is located in the southwest of the state of México, 95 km southwest of Toluca de Lerdo .

The municipality borders the municipalities Tejupilco and Tlatlaya in the state of Mexico and the municipalities Tlalchapa , Teloloapan and Cutzamala de Pinzón in the neighboring state of Guerrero .
