Nezahualcóyotl is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The seat of the municipality and its largest town is Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl . The municipality had 1,110,565 inhabitants in 2010, the area of the municipality is 63.4 km².

The municipal area comprises land formerly covered by Lake Texcoco , which was settled as a development area in the first half of the 20th century. The municipality was founded in 1963.

The municipality Nezahualcóyotl is located in the east of the state of México at an altitude of 2200 m to 2400 m in the catchment area of the Río Moctezuma . It borders the Municipios Ecatepec de Morelos , Texcoco , Chimalhuacán and La Paz as well as the Federal District of Mexico City .

More than 80% of the community area, especially the south and northwest, is completely urbanized, around 8% is pasture land. The Solonchak dominates as a natural soil type . The most important body of water is the Laguna Churubusco .
