Atenco is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The seat of the municipality is San Salvador Atenco . The community had 56,243 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 84.9 km² .
The name Atenco comes from Nahuatl : atl means water, and -tenco means "place, place", thus roughly "place of water".
Atenco became known nationwide through clashes in May 2006 between police forces and local residents, who were supported by left-wing groups (including the EZLN). 2 people lost their lives.

Atenco is located in the northeast of the state of México, 42 km northeast of central Mexico City.
The municipality borders in the north on Ecatepec de Morelos , Acolman and Tezoyuca , in the west on Ecatepec de Morelos, in the south on Texcoco and in the east on Chiautla , Chiconcuac and Texcoco.
