Tonanitla is a municipality created in 2003 in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The seat of the municipality is Santa María Tonanitla . In 2010 the municipality had 10,216 inhabitants in 2,392 households, its area is 9.1 km² .

Tonanitla is located in the north of the state of México on a plain at an altitude of about 2240 m . Three quarters of the area is used for arable farming, 20% of the municipality is used as pasture.
Tonanitla borders on the municipalities of Nextlalpan , Tecámac , Jaltenco and Tultitlán .
