Apaxco is a municipality in the Mexican state of México . It belongs to the Zona Metropolitana del Valle de México , the metropolitan region around Mexico City . The seat of the municipality and largest place in the municipality is Apaxco de Ocampo . The community had 27,521 inhabitants in 2010, its area is 75.9  km² .

The name Apaxco comes from Nahuatl : apatztli means sieve , and -co means "place, place", thus roughly "place where water flows".

Apaxco is located in the north of the state of México, 90 km north of Mexico City.

The municipality of Apaxco borders in the north on Ajacuba and Atotonilco de Tula in the state of Hidalgo , in the west on Hueypoxtla , in the south on Tequixquiac , in the southwest, and in the east again on Atotonilco de Tula.
