The Saint-Maurice-de-Carnoët Monastery (originally Notre-Dame de Carnoët, later Sanctus Mauritius) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Clohars-Carnoët in the Finistère department , Brittany region , in France . It is located around 12 km south of Quimperlé at the mouth of the Laïta coastal river in the middle of the Carnoët forest near a Roman road.

history

18th century abbot house

The monastery is said to have been founded by Duke Conan IV as early as 1170 , but it is only proven to be a Cistercian monastery in 1177. The mother monastery was the Langonnet monastery . Thus it belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . The name Saint-Maurice goes back to the first abbot Maurice Duault . The abandoned monastery, which was renovated in the 17th century, came to an end during the French Revolution and was then devastated, sold and partly used as a quarry. Another part was expanded as a castle in the 19th century. During the Second World War , the facility was occupied by German troops and suffered considerable damage. The domain was sold in 1991 to the Conservatoire du littoral, which, together with the municipality, had the site, classified as a monument historique , restored.
