Clohars-Carnoët ( Breton Kloar-Karnoed ) is a French commune in the Finistère department with 4,333 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).

location

The place is located in the south of Brittany on the Atlantic coast . Clohars-Carnoët is the southernmost municipality in the Finistère department. Quimperlé is eight kilometers north, Lorient 16 kilometers southeast, Quimper 44 kilometers northwest and Paris about 450 kilometers northeast (as the crow flies ). It is also the southernmost municipality in the department and is separated from the neighboring Morbihan department by the Laïta estuary .

Clohars-Carnoët has two small ports, namely Le Pouldu in the southernmost part of the Laïta estuary and Doëlan in a bay on the northern municipal border with Moëlan-sur-Mer . Tourism plays an important role, especially in the coastal towns .

At Quimperlé and Lorient, the next exits are on the expressway E 60 ( Brest - Nantes ) and regional train stations on the mostly parallel railway line.

The nearest regional airport is the Aéroport de Lorient Bretagne Sud near Lorient.

  • The French painter Pierre Tal-Coat (1905–1985) was born in Clohars-Carnoët.
  • In the spring of 1939, the German journalist Hans Habe stayed in a holiday home in Le Pouldu with his Basque lover Wanda, a niece of the French journalist Jacques Laparra.
  • Some of the artists from the Pont-Aven school also worked and lived in Le Pouldu.
