Nava is a place and a municipality in the Autonomous Region of Asturias in northern Spain . The 5,321 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) live in six Parroquias .

The coat of arms of the municipality consists of the coat of arms of the family “Alvarez de las Asturias” (above), the coat of arms of the monastery “San Pelayo de Oviedo” (left below) and the coat of arms of the “Family Posadas” (right below).

history

As almost everywhere in Asturias, finds from the Paleolithic confirm the early settlement of the region.

The Romans also maintained several forts there with the appropriate infrastructure to protect the gold mines of northern Spain and to supply them logistically. Significant coin and ceramic finds confirm the settlement over several hundred years.

During the Spanish War of Independence and the Carlist uprisings , the community was confirmed within its current borders. The most important infrastructure project of this time was the construction of the Oviedo - Infiesto railway line .

geography

The municipality is bordered by Sariego , Cabranes and Villaviciosa in the north, in the south by Piloña and Laviana , in the west by Bimenes and Siero .

The Rio Piloña is the largest river in the municipality. Other rivers worth mentioning are: the Río Merenderi , the Rio Salar , the Rio Punegru , the Rio la Faya , the Rio Los Cuervos , the Pendón and the Rio Fuensanta . The municipality's rivers are known for their abundance of trout , salmon and other game fish.

The mountain ranges of the Sierra de la Peña Mayor with the Pico Trigueiro (1,291 m) limit the municipality to the west. The low mountain ranges of the "Sierra de Ques", with the "Bierces (769 m)" and the nearby "Varallonga (865 m)" represent the last larger elevations towards the coast.

economy

Agriculture, and especially fruit growing (apples), has been the main source of income for the community since ancient times. The middle class is characterized by sidra production . The service industry with the tourism industry is also the division with the greatest growth here.

Specialties

  • Through the centuries of cider production, a multitude of recipes for apple wine have developed here. Chorizo in sidra and rabbit in sidra are particularly noteworthy .
  • The fabada has a long tradition here, as in all of Asturias, and is mainly eaten in the cold season.
