history

Origin of name

There are different theories about the origin of the word Morcin, the most likely one is to see the origin from the Roman Mortecinio (dies by itself), since the Rio Morcin flows so slowly that it almost dies.

Prehistory and early history

There are only a few records from this time of the community. The archaeological work did not begin until the end of the 19th century and is largely still under lock and key so as not to open the gates to robbery graves. Finds in the caves of Sidrán , Tisones and Bostriz are known , where axes , knives, hand axes and clubs from the Stone Age were found. Most of these finds indicate a settlement from the Paleolithic and Magdalenian times .

The great wealth of mineral resources also brought the Etruscans , Greeks and Phoenicians to the shores of Asturias, although little evidence speaks for the presence of the Phoenicians.

The region's mineral resources were also the destination of the Romans , who, despite fierce resistance from the Etruscans, occupied the area in 40 BC BC conquered and colonized . Numerous graves from this period prove the fierce resistance.

Christianization and the Middle Ages

Finds of Christian graves from the 1st century prove the spread of the "new faith" already in this early period. The main work here made according to legend, the Apostle James the Greater , which in later centuries to the famous pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela on the increasingly adopted today again St. James led. The work of the apostle was continued by an active priest from San Segundo and ultimately led to the deeply rooted faith of the Asturian people. In the 19th century , what was probably the most important find from this period was made in a palace on the slopes of Monsacro by the German epigraphist Emil Hübner : a 4 m high Christian-Roman epitaph that can be seen today in the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences .

Middle Ages until today

There is nothing outstanding from this age that stands out in the history of Asturias. However, the community played an important role in the last battles of the Visigoths against the oncoming Moors . According to legend, the noble Gunderich Argolida came to Santa Eulalia with his family during the last years of the Visigothic rule . When they heard of the Moors' invasion, it was decided to send a strong contingent of fighters to defend the country and the faith. Pelayo and Bishop Urban of Oviedo were among the few survivors of the Battle of the Río Guadalete . A church was built in Santa Eulalia in honor of the fallen.

Geography and climate

Transport routes of the community

The Morcin administrative district is framed by mountain ranges along the Rio Caudal. The Pico Gamonal stands out as the highest mountain with 1712 msnm . Mines in which iron and hard coal are extracted still work along these mountain ranges , some of these mines were already exploited in antiquity .

Waters

The rivers Rio Caudal , Rio Riosa and Rio Morcin cross the administrative district, the reservoir "Embalse de los Alfilorios", which is fed by the Río Pinera , was completed in the 1960s and with its 517,000 m 2 is the largest standing water in the municipality .
