Location of the municipality | ||
Langreo ( Asturian Llangréu ) is a city in the northern Spanish Autonomous Community of Asturias , which forms a municipality called Concejo (in Asturias and Galicia, the Concejos correspond to the Municipios in the rest of Spain). Langreo has 39,420 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and a size of 82.46 km². The place consists of different parishes (districts), of which La Felguera with 22,000 inhabitants and Sama with 12,000 inhabitants are the most important. The Río Nalón flows through Langreo.
history
Until the Middle Ages
Langreo's founding goes back to the Romans , who built an important road here to transport the mined mineral resources. There are still bridges and fragments of the road that are still in use today. Two forts , Pico Castiello in Ciaño and Riaño, were built to protect this road. In 857, Ordoño I handed the community over to the Archdiocese of Oviedo , where the name Langueyo was first mentioned in a document. The archbishopric then donated the churches (Iglesias) Santa Eulalia, San Cosme and San Damián to the community (probably also to appease the trading houses fearing for their influence). 1075, Alfonso VI raised new taxes, which also affected the Archdiocese of Oviedo (and thus also its municipalities); The unloved Queen Urraca confirmed these taxes. However, the archbishopric refused to pay these taxes, whereupon an embargo was imposed on the affected communities. Under the banner of Langreo, 10 cadets then rebelled against the crown and joined the Cid .
Til today
During the Spanish War of Independence , the community was a marching-out area. French troops burned down the church of San Lorenzo del Puente. During the Carlist uprising in 1874, the entire city archive burned down. In the 18th century Langreo joined the "mine belt" (Cuencas Mineras Asturianas - an association of mining communities). Growing industrialization led, among other things, to the founding of the companies Duro Felguera, SA (founder: Pedro Duro), which still exist today, and the "Fábrica de La Felguera" (linen production and processing). In the following years a separate railway line, the "Ferrocarril de Langreo", was established, which served the Langreo - Gijón line . Parts of the route and the "industrial park" Felguera were placed under protection by UNESCO in 1960 .
