Taramundi is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .

location

The municipality is bordered by San Tirso de Abres and Vegadeo in the north, by Villanueva de Oscos and Vegadeo in the east, in the north, west by Lugo and in the south by Santa Eulalia de Oscos .

history

Finds from the Stone Age confirm the early settlement of the region. On the plateau of the Sierra de Ouroso and on mountain slopes of Pereira and Navallo still bear witness tumuli , cemeteries and several hill forts from the settlement by gallaeci . The Romans also had two forts here called Castro en Ouria and Castro en Taramundi, the discovery of bronze coins confirms the Galläker obligation to pay tribute, but also their extensive trade relations.

geology

land

The subsoil, consisting mainly of limestone and slate , with the Ouroso (1,033 m) as the highest elevation, is typical of the region.

Waters

The municipality is crossed by the Río Eo .

climate

As in large parts of Asturias, the proximity to the Gulf Stream means that the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers but cold winters, and in autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms.

economy

As in much of Asturias, agriculture is the main industry here. Special features here are the liqueurs , jams and the queso de Taramundi (cheese), which is produced in numerous variants, which are known throughout Spain . Trade and production only take place in medium-sized companies. The few cutlers that are still in operation and produce knives using traditional craftsmanship are particularly noteworthy .
