Cabrales is a Spanish municipality ( concejo in Asturias, corresponds to the municipio in the rest of Spain) in the autonomous region of Asturias with the capital Carreña .
history
Until the Middle Ages
The settlement of the region goes back to the Paleolithic Age , cave paintings in the caves of Covaciella and El Bosque, as well as tool finds in the cave (Cueva) Las Canes prove this.
The region was not mentioned again until 722, when Moorish troops passed through here on their way to the Battle of Covadonga .
Til today
In ecclesiastical documents, the construction of the Iglesia (Church) San Pedro in Camarmeña is documented in the 12th century. the Concejo Cabrales was first mentioned in the 14th century. Until the 19th century, the Concejo was ruled by regional families. During the Spanish War of Independence , the community was the deployment and marching area of the French troops under General Bonet.

The community has 1960 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and an area of 238.29 km². The largest elevation is the mountain Pico Torrecerredo with 2,648 m.
land
Limestone and other metamorphic sedimentary rocks are the dominant rock formations.
The mountain ranges of the Picos de Europa are typical of this part of Asturias.
rivers and lakes
Cabrales is crossed by the Río Cares , Rio las Llanas , Rio Casaño , Rio Cerezo , Rio Terviña , Rio Duje , Rio Bulnes and many smaller mountain rivers. Several small mountain lakes similar to Lago Enol in the Picos de Europa can be found in the area of the municipality.

Regional specialties
The Cabrales region is famous for the cheese of the same name, Cabrales , which matures in caves in the high mountains. It is available in different ages, depending on the heat or flavor of the cheese.

Since time immemorial, livestock farming (cattle, goats and sheep) has been the main branch of the community. Trade and production takes place only in small and medium-sized companies. The vast majority of employees commute. Nature tourism has been a growing source of income over the past 20 years.

Attractions
Numerous alpine pastures with typical Asturian farmhouses and of course cheese factories invite you to visit and rest. Due to the eventful history, there are buildings with Moorish, Castilian, Romanesque and Gothic influences in the entire region.
