history

Experts already suspect a settlement in the Neolithic Age , but the settlement can only be proven in the Bronze Age . Remains of ramparts have been found near the towns of Trascastro and Pola , which indicate continued settlement. Several denarii from the 1st century BC were found near the towns of Gua and Coto de la Buena , which shows the lively trading activity of the residents.

During the Roman occupation, the road network was significantly expanded and protected by forts in exposed places. Many of these routes were still of vital military importance during the Reconquista .

In the middle of the 12th century, King Ferdinand II and his wife Urraca donated a monastery to the young Cistercian order near the village of Gua , to which another monastery and several churches were added in quick succession. At the end of the 13th century, the nearby Belmonte exerted enormous economic pressure on the monastery, so that King Alfonso X granted the place town and market rights . In 1277 several localities were subordinated to the city, so that the city grew into a municipality.

In 1810, during the Spanish War of Independence, the municipality was the deployment and retreat area for the Asturian troops against the advancing French army. Due to the strategic location of the municipality, it was a strongly defended area again and again during the Carlist Wars and the Spanish Civil War .
