Location of the municipality | ||
Cabranes , (Cabranes also in Asturian ) is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .
The municipality is bounded by Villaviciosa to the north and east, and to the south by Piloña and Nava .
The administrative seat of the municipality is Santa Eulalia , the judicial district of Piloña .
history
As almost everywhere in Asturias, finds from the Paleolithic confirm the early settlement of the region.
Remains of barrows can still be seen today on the municipal border with Villaviciosa and two more on the Incós and Montaliñu mountains.
The settlement from the Castro culture by the Romans and Moors has left no traces worth seeing, but has shaped the character of the population.
The first written mention dates back to 846 and was found in the parish church of Gramedo . This document defines the municipal capital of Santa Eulalia and the first boundaries of the municipality.
In the 13th century, the monastery " Monasterio de Santa María de Valdediós " was founded in neighboring Villaviciosa, the monastery was also given the religious leadership (and thus also the income) of the municipality of Cabranes.
Constant friction with the local noble families was the result. Only in the 16th century this dependency was broken and the fiefdom changed drastically.
