History and sights

Former Llanes Casino (built in 1910, now a cultural center)

Llanes has a traditional fishing port that is still in operation today. A plaque in the city today commemorates 65 sailors from Llanes who sailed the three ships that the city provided for the Spanish Armada in 1588 . Parts of the preserved city wall date back to 1206, the year in which King Alfonso IX. received city privileges. Llanes was also one of the first whaling ports outside the Basque Country and Scandinavia.

Aeródromo de Llanes

To the southeast of Llanes, on the southern edge of the Cués district, there was a field airfield during the civil war . This was initially used by the air forces of the Republic of Spain . After the conquest of General Franco's fascist troops advancing from the east in September 1937, Llanes was in the territory of the country controlled by Franco . The square was immediately used by the Spanish fascists and the German Condor Legion during the further advance of Franco's troops during the war in the north . Fighter pilots of the National Socialist Jagdgruppe 88 (J / 88) were lying here . Today there is a golf course on the site.
