Location of the municipality | ||
Grandas de Salime is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias , in northern Spain .
Local situation
The municipality borders on San Martín de Oscos , Pesoz and Santa Eulalia de Oscos to the north, Allande to the east, and Lugo to the west and south . It is divided into 8 Parroquias : Grandas de Salime - 889 inhabitants, La Mesa - 32 inhabitants, Negueira - 35 inhabitants, Peñafuente - 90 inhabitants, Trabada - 84 inhabitants, Villarpedre - 6 inhabitants and Vitos - 20 inhabitants (all population figures from 2006. )
The subsoil, consisting mainly of limestone and sandstone , with the Pedras Apañadas (1,204 m) as the highest elevation, is typical for the entire region. The municipality is crossed by the Navia and several smaller tributaries such as the Agüeira . The reservoir with an area of 685 hectares was completed in 1945. In 1954, the associated hydropower plant was put into operation, which resulted in many changes in the community's water balance.
Due to the proximity to the Gulf Stream , the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters; in spring and autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms. The annual rainfall is between 1,100 and 1,200 mm.
history
The historical evidence goes back to the Bronze Age . The remains of a hill fort (Castro) can still be seen today . The original Way of St. James , the Camino Primitivo, runs through the municipality . As early as the 13th century, the Colegiata de El Salvador was built as a pilgrims' hostel and monastery church. Several hermitages , some of which are splendidly furnished, are evidence of religious life.
The Embalse de Salime dam, completed in 1945, awakened the area to new economic activity.
economy
The livestock industry is the traditional and with over 50 percent also the largest economic power of the community. For several years now, the proportion of organic farming has increased enormously. The establishment of two nature parks and the abundance of fish in the rivers promote tourism, which already accounts for more than 30 percent of the entire service industry. The construction and retail trade make up the remaining share of the region's economic volume. This leads to the death of the corner shops that used to be in every hamlet. As in all of Spain, the presence of the discounters is clearly noticeable.
