history

The region has been settled since prehistoric times. Prehistoric rock carvings have been found in the El Sidron cave near Borines . At that time, the Piloña area was inhabited by the Loggones , one of the most important tribes of Asturias. During the Roman occupation of Asturias , Piloña was also conquered. There are many references to churches and places in Piloña in the medieval records. In the Liber Tesatamentorum in the Cathedral of Oviedo it is confirmed on September 23, 926 that Ramiro II , son of Alfonso III. and Queen Jimena, made several donations to the Church of Oviedo . These included several churches and places in Piloña. In 1378 a council meeting took place in the chapter house of Oviedo Cathedral, where the delimitation of Piloña was established and the town charter was declared. In 1810, during the War of Independence , Spanish units were concentrated in Infiesto under the command of General Nicolás Llano Ponte to stop the advance of Napoleonic troops under General Bonet. The municipality's first public schools were founded in Infiesto in 1785. On October 18, 1891, the Oviedo – Infiesto line was officially opened. During the military coup in 1936, Piloña remained in the republican Asturian territory until mid-October 1937, only when the last bulwark on the Rio Sella fell did the Asturian defense give way. When they withdrew, the Infiesto bridge was blown up.

Meaning of the coat of arms

On September 4, 1880, the mayor informed the provincial delegation that from that date on the municipality would receive an official coat of arms. Over a blue ground an armed rider (pelayo), followed by a squire, wading through the river. It bears the motto: "Adelante mi escudero que mi caballo pie halla" (Forward, my squire, that my horse may gain a foothold).
