history

Until the Middle Ages

As almost everywhere in Asturias, traces of settlement can be found here in the Nalón Valley as early as the Bronze Age . Dolmens and ramparts can still be seen along the river today.
The Romans had also built an important road here that ran along the Rio Navia . There are still bridges and fragments of the road that are still in use today.

Til today

In the 12th century, the name Caso was first recorded in documents from the Archdiocese of Oviedo . Only in the 15th century did the community draw attention to itself again with the development of new iron mines . In addition to livestock farming, these mines account for the region's wealth.

coat of arms

From the roll of the coat of arms of Oviedo (Apuntes heráldicos. Heráldica asturiana y catálogo armorial de España, Oiedo, 1892) it is clear that Ciriaco Miguel Vigil registered this coat of arms created by him.

economy

This community is called “El país de la madreña” (land of wooden shoes) not only because of its persistent agriculture and forestry, but it is also intended to show that wood has always been and is important in the entire regional economy. Large, old cabinet makers still exist today. Tourism, especially nature and recreational tourism, is a growing source of income for the municipality. However, the main occupation no longer takes place in agriculture, the number of commuters to the nearby industrial areas of Gijón, Oviedo, but also León is constantly increasing.
