Location of the municipality | ||
Ribadedeva is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias , in northern Spain . Bounded to the north by the Cantabrian Sea , to the south by Peñamellera Baja , to the west by Llanes and to the east by Cantabria .
history
Primeval times
Settlement of the region has been proven as early as the Stone Age . Tools and rock carvings (including bison , mammoth , deer ) were discovered in the Tinamayor cave (cueva de Tinamayor) and in the nearby Pindal cave .
Finds from the Epipalaeolithic confirm the continued settlement of Asturias. A burial site and the remains of a mill were found in the area of the hamlets of Covariellas, Tina and Tronía . Only a few finds from the Neolithic Age (e.g. the stone ax from Covacho del Cazarru) have survived.
middle Ages
Only a few skirmishes with the Moors are known in the region under the administration of the nearby Llanes . The first documentary mention comes from the church records of San Salvador de Celorio in 1157, another from the year 1169 in the records of the administration of Aguilar.
Under the reign of King Alfonso XI. Ribadedeva received city rights in 1376 .
Modern times to the present
In 1749 Ribadedeva received four more places on the coast and was big enough for a seat in the Parliament of Cantabria , which the place held from 1778 to 1815. 1833-1834 the place finally fell to Asturias. The 19th century was marked by the great wave of emigration to America, which in turn made the communities very prosperous because the emigrants' lands fell to the communities.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Asturian and Cantabrian railway lines were merged and the road network was merged. During the civil war , the region was feared by government troops because of its freedom fighters . In 1948, Corsino and Eduardo Castiello (regional freedom heroes) fell into a fatal ambush on La Franca beach.
economy
The agriculture and fisheries sector occupied by 45.5 percent to account for the largest share of the regional economy. The construction industry is the second largest employer with 17.08 percent. The remaining shares can be found in administration as well as in trade and (increasing) in the tourism industry .
