Proaza is a municipality ( concejo in Asturias, corresponds to municipio in the rest of Spain) in the south of the autonomous region of Asturias in Spain .

The municipality with its 744 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) has an area of ​​5.29 km² and is administratively divided into eight parroquias .

history

Finds from the Paleolithic testify to the early settlement of the community. Bone carvings and rock carvings indicate the tribe that also left traces in Castrillón , Los Teyeros and Samartin.

From the following period, several hill fortes document the continued settlement by Celtic tribes .

In the Middle Ages , the municipality developed into a strategic point on the main connecting route between the Kingdom of León and the Kingdom of Asturias . The historic route is called Camino Real del Puerto de la Mesa and can still be seen today through old structures such as the Bridge of Ventana (Puerto de Ventana).

The first documentary mention can be found in a deed of donation from the year 863 in which the lands of Uandugio, Pruazia and Charanga are mentioned. The municipality was thus subject to the jurisdiction and tax sovereignty of the Archdiocese of Oviedo , which repeatedly led to uprisings. In 1581 under the reign of Philip II , the separation of church and state power was implemented.
