Location of the municipality

Colunga is a place in the east of the Spanish province of Asturias . It is the capital of the municipality of the same name and is located directly on the Cantabrian Sea . The Way of St. James (Camino del Norte) runs through the city.

history

Finds in the caves of Obaya prove a settlement as early as the Old Stone Age . There are some hills in the district (e.g. at: La Riera, La Isla and Villeda) that were inhabited even before the Romans. The best known is certainly El Castiellu near La Riera, with its defensive system built in terraces that are connected to each other by a series of ramps. A wide horizon can be monitored from its top . In the Middle Ages the churches of Sta. María de Libardón, Santiago de Gobiendes and Sta. María de Tuna emerged. The present city was administered by the local nobility . King Alfonso X officially granted the city city rights .

economy

Colunga's port and its fishing industry are among the most important in Asturias. Agriculture and especially forestry have a high priority . The large apple orchards are famous. For some years now, tourism has also been growing.
