Gamaliel IV.
Gamaliel IV ( Hebrew רבן גמליאל הרביעי) was a Jewish patriarch in the late 3rd century. Approx. 270-290 he presided over the high council .
Life
He was the son and successor of Patriarch Judah II and father of Patriarch Judah III. According to Halevy , he was a contemporary of Hoscha'ja , who is said to have prevented the Patriarch from introducing tithing in Syria . In the Jerusalem Talmud ('Avoda sara 39b) a question is mentioned which concerned a religious law and which Abbahu had addressed to the Patriarch.
The humanity of the patriarch becomes clear in his reply. This is how the Jewish teacher describes himself and compares his fame and erudition with Abbahu. He concludes that Abbahu is wiser than himself.
