Castropol is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias , in northern Spain .

location

In the north the municipality is bounded by the Cantabrian Sea , in the south by Vegadeo and Villanueva de Oscos , in the west by the Eo and the Galician city of Ribadeo in the east by Tapia de Casariego , El Franco and Boal .

history

Finds from the Bronze Age prove that the entire region was settled for a long time.

The Roman rule over the region along the Navia left clear traces in Castropol as well as in the entire surrounding area.

In the Middle Ages , the city at the mouth of the Eo played a subordinate role. In 1032 the first monastery, the Monasterio de San Juan de Corias, was founded, which for a long time caused strife with the weakened city of Lugo.

Only Alfonso VII ended the dispute in the 13th century by defining Lugo, west of the Eo, as belonging to Galicia and placing Castropol, lying on the Ostofer, under the sovereignty of Oviedo .

From the 14th century, Castropol became the economic and administrative center of the area between the Navia and the Eo. Castropol remained so until the 18th century, when English troops invaded and the city had to pay dearly for its freedom.
