Siero is a Spanish municipality ( concejo in Asturias, corresponds to the municipio in the rest of Spain) in the autonomous region of Asturias . It borders Gijón to the north, Langreo and San Martín del Rey Aurelio to the south, Oviedo and Llanera to the west, and Villaviciosa , Sariego , Nava and Bimenes to the east . The capital is Pola de Siero .
history
Until the Middle Ages
Settlement of the region goes back to the Paleolithic Age , barrows near "Alto de la Mayá" (Espinera) and "Cantu Negru" (Bobes) still bear witness to this today.
The Romans also had an important road here that ran along the Rio Seco . Settlements and bridges at the places "Colloto", "Bergueres", "Lugones" and "la Pola" and fragments of the road that are still in use today. The first documentary mention comes from the year 905, when under the reign of Alfonso III. the (Church) "Iglesia de Santa María", in San Martín de Siero, was given to the Archdiocese of Oviedo . The church "Iglesia de San Félix" in Hevia followed in 967.
Since the medieval times
In 1270, under Alfonso X. , a delimitation of the community was first written down.
Until the 19th century the Concejo was ruled by regional families and the Archdiocese of Oviedo.
During the Spanish War of Independence , the community was occupied by the French General Kellermann in 1809, and again by General Bonet the following year.
The crest
The coat of arms contains the old city symbol from 1580. At its center is a lily as a symbol of purity and purification.

Way of St. James
The Way of St. James , Camino de la Costa , runs through the municipality. The place Pola de Siero with the (parish church) "Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro" are the goal of this route through Siero.

The municipality with its 51,667 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) has an area of 211.60 km². The highest point is the Picu Fariu with 731 meters.
geology
Limestone and other metamorphic sedimentary rocks are the dominant rock formations.
