climate
As in large parts of Asturias, the proximity to the Gulf Stream has a mild climate with warm, humid summers but cold winters, and in autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms.
history
Until the Middle Ages
As almost everywhere in Asturias, finds from the Neolithic period confirm the early settlement of the region.
Several tumuli (in: Pumarín, Unqueru, Campu La Braña and Monte Caon) can still be seen today. There are several dolmens , all of which have not yet been cataloged. The fortresses of Agues (Soto de Agues), Campiellos and Corona de Castro bear witness to the continued settlement of the region.
The Romans had also built an important road here that ran along the Rio Navia . There are still bridges and fragments of the road that are still in use today. The "Castillo de los Aceales" with the "Torrexón de Villamorey" was the largest fortification in the valley of the Rio Nalon. It was razed several times under Alfonso I , rebuilt and later handed over to the Santiagoorden. In 1344 the boundaries and the associated places were written down in the Carta Puebla .
Til today
In 1523, with the end of the Order of Santiago, the parish was under ecclesiastical administration until 1528. Philip II sold the community to Oviedo Abbey in 1528 for the price of 600,000 maravedis . The name "el coto de Sobrescobio" was first written down here.
During the Spanish War of Independence , the community was the marching-out area of General Gómez in the fight against the French troops under General Bonet.
During the Carlist uprisings , the community remained liberal and retained its seat in the general assembly of the principality. The capital of the municipality remained in La Polina until 1929 , when the municipality council decided Rioseco as the new capital.

economy
Up to the end of the 19th century, agriculture and forestry accounted for up to 90% of the total population. The region's cattle breeding and chestnuts were known throughout Spain. The fall in prices and increasing industrialization also caused a corresponding "rural exodus" in the community. Today most of the workers are employed as commuters in the nearby industrial plants of Oviedo , Gijón etc. Regional tourism is also increasing thanks to the nearby mountain ranges and nature parks.
