Villayón is a city and namesake of the municipality of the same name in the autonomous community of Asturias , in northern Spain .

location

The municipality is bordered by Navia in the north, in the west by Coaña , Boal and Illano , in the east by Valdés , Tineo and Allande in the south by Allande.

history

The upper two fields of the coat of arms refer to the coat of arms of Navia , the lower large field to the cattle wealth of the region.

As almost everywhere in Asturias, finds from the Stone Age confirm the early settlement of the region. Several ramparts of the early Asturians and other Celtic tribes can still be seen today. The Romans also had several forts here and there are still bridges from this time that are still in use.

Until 1868 Villayón was incorporated into the Comarca Navia and was the last municipality to gain independence.

Natural conditions

The subsoil, consisting mainly of limestone , slate and sandstone , with the Carondio (1,221 m) as the highest point, is typical of the region.

The municipality is crossed by the Río Navia .
The Oneta waterfalls (Cascada de Oneta) are the largest in Asturias.
Lago Arbón is a mountain lake and an important excursion destination.

As in large parts of Asturias, due to the proximity to the Gulf Stream, there is an almost Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers but cold winters, and in autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms.

economy

As in much of Asturias, agriculture is the main industry here. Livestock farming in particular (as can be seen in the coat of arms) and beekeeping are the outstanding specialties of agriculture. Due to its location on the Rio Navia, the tourism industry, especially for nature lovers, canoeists and anglers, is growing rapidly. Trade and production only take place in medium-sized companies.
