history
Until the Middle Ages
As almost everywhere in Asturias, finds from the Bronze Age confirm the early settlement of the region.
Several hill castles and barrows from the Iron Age and beyond can still be seen today.
The Romans also had an important road here, which led along the Rio Navia . There are still bridges that are still in use today.
Til today
The name San Martín del Rey Aurelio supposedly goes back to King Aurelio I , who ruled the Kingdom of Asturias (according to legend from San Martin) in the early Middle Ages . However, San Martin was administratively subordinate to the neighboring Langreo .
In the 18th century, the region made a name for itself again during the Spanish War of Independence and the Carlist uprisings.

economy
Mining has long been one of the largest employers in the region, otherwise, as in much of Asturias, agriculture is the largest branch of business. The livestock industry in particular has the largest share here. Due to its location on the Rio Nalón, the tourism industry, especially for nature lovers, is growing rapidly. Trade and production takes place predominantly in medium-sized companies.
