Aurelio (Asturias)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aurelio (* around 740 ; † 774 ) was King of Asturias from 768 to 774 . He was the son of Fruela, the brother of King Alfonso I.

After the murder of his cousin, King Fruela I , Aurelio became his successor, since Fruela's son Alfonso II was still a minor. Slaves made a revolt which Aurelio put down; Only brief remarks by the chroniclers provide information about this socially interesting process .

Aurelio kept peace with the Arabs. It is not known whether there was a tacit or a contractually agreed ceasefire. Speculations that the peace should be interpreted as the submission of Aurelio to the suzerainty of the emir Abd ar-Rahman I are lacking in the sources and are not plausible because the emir was busy with other, more urgent tasks at the time.

Aurelio died of an illness. It is not known whether he was married or whether he had offspring. He had a brother named Bermudo who was a deacon . Aurelio's successor, Silo, was a son-in-law of King Alfonso I. It was not until 788 that Bermudo came to power despite his membership of the clergy.
