Silo (Asturias)

silo

Silo († 783 ) was King of Asturias from 774 to 783 .

Silo was married to Adosinda , a daughter of King Alfonso I. He owed this fact that he came to power after the death of King Aurelio . His father is unknown. Like his predecessor, he kept peace with the Arabs, as the Chronicle of Albelda notes, "for the sake of his mother" (who apparently came from Muslim territory). Speculations that the peace meant the submission of Silo to the suzerainty of the Emir Abd ar-Rahman I have no basis in the sources and are not necessary for the declaration of peace.

Silo moved the capital of Asturias from Cangas de Onís to Pravia . He put down a revolt in Galicia . Silo died childless. After his death, his widow tried in vain to put her nephew, who later became King Alfonso II , on the throne. In November 785 she entered a monastery in Pravia that Silo had founded.
