Bernard Werber (2012)

Bernard Werber (born September 18, 1961 in Toulouse ) is a French writer.

Life

At the age of 14 he wrote stories for a fan magazine. After studying criminology and journalism, he worked as a scientific journalist for about ten years. Then he took the first opportunity to live on his income as a writer.

In 2019 the asteroid (381048) Werber was named after him.

His predilection for science stems from his time as a scientific journalist, which he brings back to his stories again and again (recognizable in “Les fourmis / the ants”, “la mort” or “les origines de l'humanité”). However, critics assume he is a certain naivete. His style can be explained as a mixture of adventure saga, interwar science fiction and philosophical narrative. Bernard Werber divides most of his novels into intrigue and information: he alternates between documenting articles on the selected topic and two narrative threads that only overlap from time to time. It can be seen that his novels and short stories mix. You can also see the merging of the people. For example, one can find the person of Edmond Wells in “L'Empire des Anges” and in the trilogy of the ants.

  • The Ants ( Les Fourmis ), Science et Avenir readers' award , 1991. This book is his great success: more than two million copies have been sold and it has been translated into more than thirty languages.

  • The Invasion (all three volumes in one edition), 2010

Trilogy of the thanatonauts

  • Les Thanatonautes, 1994. Bernard Werber says he has a penchant for this book. Perhaps because it is the book that had the least public success when it came out in large format; however, it was successful as a paperback.
  • In the realm of angels ( L'Empire des Anges ), Jules Verne Prize, 2000

Trilogy by Nous les Dieux (We the Gods)

  • L'ile des sortilèges, 2004

Note: the official Bernard Werber website combines these two books under the term trilogy. So the appearance of a third volume can be expected which will then justify the use of the term "trilogy". Bernard Werber summarizes these three books on his website under the term "Cycle Aventuriers de la Science".
