history
The first traces of settlement in the region date from the Paleolithic Age . Findings of tools and paintings in caves near Fornu and Conde prove this. Two not yet fully researched hill forts prove the lasting settlement on the Iron Age through to the Roman Empire .
The church of Santo Adriano de Tuñón dates from the beginnings of the Kingdom of Asturias in the ninth century , and as a remnant of the abandoned Benedictine monastery , it still provides an impression of the pre-Romanesque architecture .
In the twelfth century, the valley of the Rio Trubia made a name for itself again when the revolt against King Alfonso VII began in Buanga Castle .
In 1589, under King Philip II , Santo Adriano became an independent municipality with its own jurisdiction . The seat of administration became Villanueva, which is still the case to this day.
