Belmonte de Miranda , (Miranda in Asturian ) is a municipality and at the same time its capital in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .

The municipality is bordered by Salas in the north, Grado in the east, Somiedo and Teverga in the south, and Tineo in the west .

Flora and fauna

The municipality is located at the natural park " Parque Natural de Somiedo ", which is home to a large number of plants and animals that have now become rare over an area of ​​291 km². The idea of ​​the nature park has also been integrated into the wider area over the past 10 years, so that brown bears and wolves have now also made their home outside the protection zone .

Mountains, rivers and lakes

The Rio Narcea limits the community to the west. Other noteworthy rivers are: the Río Pigueña with its largest tributary the Rio Chamosu , the Rio Caixa , the Rio les Dormiechas , and the Rio de Solanos . The Embalse de la Barca reservoir forms the largest body of water in the municipality. The municipality's rivers and lakes are known for their abundance of trout , salmon and other game fish. On the mountains are the Pico L'Horru (1,527 m), Pico La Chana (1,388 m), Pico Los Calostros (1,428 m), Pico Pousadoiro (1,474 m), Pico Courío (1,017 m) and the Pico la Forca (1,488 m ) to be named as the most outstanding in the community. Until the Middle Ages

As almost everywhere in Asturias, finds from the Bronze Age confirm the early settlement of the region.

economy

Since time immemorial, agriculture, and especially livestock farming with all its ancillary businesses such as dairies, cheese factories, etc., has been the main source of income for the community. The biggest employer was the mining industry until the mines closed in 2006, many of the miners now commute to neighboring communities, where larger mines are still in operation. The service industry with the tourism industry is also the division with the greatest growth here.
