The Romans also had several forts here with the appropriate infrastructure to protect and logistically supply the gold mines of northern Spain. The most important route, the " Camino Real del Puerto de la Mesa ", is still clearly visible today, there are still bridges from Roman times that are still in use today.

There are few documentaries from medieval times. The first documentary mention comes from the reign of Bermudo II with the establishment of a monastery called "La Villa Lapideum" (see main article Belmonte Monastery ). In the period that followed, the community experienced a varied distribution and distribution of responsibilities. Only under Alfonso VII did the community become autonomous in all areas.

Since time immemorial, agriculture, and especially livestock farming with all its ancillary businesses such as dairies, cheese factories, etc., has been the main source of income for the community. The biggest employer was the mining industry until the mines closed in 2006, many of the miners now commute to neighboring communities, where larger mines are still in operation. The service industry with the tourism industry is also the division with the greatest growth here.
