The Belmonte Monastery (Bellus Mons; Santa María de Lapedo; La Villa Lapideum) is a former Cistercian monk abbey in the Concejo Belmonte de Miranda in Asturias in Spain , in the valley of the Rio Pigüeña.
history
The monastery was probably founded shortly before the turn of the millennium by Queen Velasquita, the wife of King Bermudo II of León and Galicia, and placed under his protection by King Alfonso VII of Castile . There are no remains of this building. In 1206 the monastery joined the Cistercian order; it was subordinate to the Carracedo monastery and thus belonged to the filiation of the Cîteaux monastery . The name Belmonte comes from the small town that was formed near the monastery. In the abolition of the monastery ( disamortization ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal , the monastery was dissolved in 1835 and soon demolished. The demolition material was used for various civil structures.
Buildings and plant
