Illano is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias in northern Spain .

location

The municipality is bordered by Boal in the north, Pesoz and Santa Eulalia de Oscos in the south, by Villayón , Allande and Boal in the west and in the east by Villanueva de Oscos and Castropol .

history

Finds from the Stone Age made in the last 20 years confirm the early settlement of the region. In the Sierra de Carondio , megalithic tombs and dolmens were found, which are still very impressive evidence of this era.

Several ramparts , such as near the hamlet of Hevia, bear witness to the settlement by the Gallaekers and Asturians .

The Middle Ages are marked by major religious activities such as the founding of the monastery in nearby Villanueva de Oscos.

During the reign of Felipe II , Illano bought himself free from the administrative and judicial sovereignty of Castropol for the amount of 6,323,766 maravedís , thereby gaining independence.

geology

land

The subsoil, consisting mainly of limestone and sandstone , with the Sierra de Bobia (1,136 m) as the highest elevation, is typical for the entire region.

Waters

The municipality is crossed by the Río Navia and several smaller tributaries.

climate

As in large parts of Asturias, the proximity to the Gulf Stream means that the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters, with relatively strong storms in spring and autumn.

economy

After the times of rural exodus, the age structure is relatively high, the emigration of young people has led to the fact that agriculture has remained almost exclusively as an economic factor, but here, too, due to the aging of the population, a death of farmers can be seen. Trade and production are as good as nonexistent.
