history
The crest
- above: the angel's cross
- below: refers to the location on the edge of the Sierra del Aramo with the two rivers Rio Xuncar and Rio Grandiella that flow through the municipality.
Antiquity to modern times
Numerous finds from the Bronze Age attest to the early settlement and economic success of the community. The abundance of copper and the lush pastures of the mountain slopes and valleys meant that the region was settled very early, but for a long time. The first mention of the community comes from the year 857 from a will, which however turned out to be a forgery. In fact, a deed of donation was confirmed from 1075, which certifies the parish of Santa María de Riosa to the Archdiocese of Oviedo .
Modern times
The community itself only reappeared significantly in modern times, when coal mining became important for increasing industrialization in the mid-19th century.
