The Romans maintained several forts here with an accompanying infrastructure such as bridges and aqueducts , some of which still exist and are in use today. The Romans were also the ones with the places Navelgas and Cerrado gold found, mined this and how many coins found there prove impressed . There is still gold in these rivers today: The 32nd World Goldpanning Championships took place from 21 to 27 May. July 2008 in Navelgas (Concejo de Tineo).
From the reign of King Silo comes a document dated January 17, 780 about the foundation of the monastery "Monasterio de Santa María la Real" in Obona. In 1222 Alfonso IX founded Tineo as a transit point on the pilgrimage from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela . The place continues this tradition today with two pilgrim hostels.
In the 19th century, the municipality was the scene of several battles and skirmishes in the Spanish struggle for freedom and the civil war of the Carlist .

As in large parts of Asturias, the proximity to the Gulf Stream means that the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers but cold winters, and in autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms.
The soil consists mainly of metamorphic rock such as quartzite , slate and sandstone and has its highest elevation with the Patana (1,532 m).
The municipal area is crossed by numerous rivers (Rio Vichar, Rio Garboso, Rio Las Pontidas, Rio Gera, Rio Rodical, Rio Arganza, Rio Pequeño), and the Rio Narcea forms the eastern border of the Comarca for long stretches. The reservoirs "Embalse de la Florida" and Embalse de la Barca are an enormous destination.
The biodiversity of red beech , birch , oak , chestnut , ash and hazelnut is striking, some of which are of astonishing size and age. For example:
- "Carbayón de Valentín" (an oak - 16 m high - 20 m crown circumference - 10 m trunk)
- "Fayona de Eiros" (a red beech - 28 m high - 30 m crown circumference - 4.45 m trunk - 200 years old)
declared a natural monument on April 27, 1995. With this wealth of trees and hedges and this is wild boar , deer , the Dam - and game birds so strongly represented that the hunt is essential and is practiced widely in the population.
economy
Agriculture and mining are the largest employers in the region. The third position is taken by the trade and transport industry. At the reservoirs electricity has been generated for many decades, the construction of several modern wind farms, etc. a. on Mount Gallu, the municipality has made it one of the largest electricity producers in Asturias. Nature lovers and pilgrims to St. James make that tourism is also growing rapidly.
