El Franco is a municipality in the autonomous region of Asturias , in northern Spain . The municipality is located with its administrative seat La Caridad in the judicial district of Castropol . The highest point of the municipality is the "La Penouta" with 899 m.

location

In the north the municipality is bounded by the Cantabrian Sea , in the south by Boal and Castropol , in the west by Coaña , in the east by Tapia de Casariego .

history

Smaller finds from the Neolithic Age show that the region was settled early. Remains of ramparts from prehistoric times in Arancedo and in neighboring Coaña and Mohias are still visible today.

In the 18th century, old gold mines were found near the Arancedo hill fort , which are still accessible today.

During the Middle Ages, El Franco was divided into the dioceses of Lugo and Oviedo , but the administrative capital at that time was Castropol .

In 1852 the administrative seat of El Franco was finally moved to the Parroquia La Caridad, where it is still today.

land

The subsoil, consisting mainly of limestone and sandstone , with La Penouta (899 m) as the highest elevation, is typical of the entire coastal region with its steep cliffs , bays , meadows and forests.

Waters

The municipality is crossed by the Porcía and the Mazo .

climate

Due to the proximity to the Gulf Stream , the climate here is almost Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters; in spring and autumn there are sometimes relatively strong storms.

economy

In the first place of the employees are livestock and fishing . The dairy industry continues to show the highest growth here after the EU protective measures began to take effect in fishing .

The tourism and administration companies form the second largest position of employers, with tourism showing the greatest growth in the region.

Medium-sized trading and production companies can be found predominantly in the smaller industrial parks in the neighboring communities.
